First graffiti

The word graffiti comes from Greek and Italian - the Greek word "graphein" meaning "to write" and the Italian word "graffito" meaning "scratch". The latter is still used in archeology today and refers to a scratched drawing or inscription. Such graffiti is said to have appeared frequently in Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire.

Graffiti, as we know it today, started in the late sixties in Philadelphia. It was mainly about political statements and marking the territories of street gangs.
