“Hip-Hop”

Keith “Cowboy” Wiggins, one of the MCs with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, is also known in the hip-hop community for coining the phrase “hip-hop” (and by accident). While making fun of one of his friends who had just joined the U.S. Army, Wiggins used the phrase "hip-hop" to imitate the sounds made by the cadence of marching soldiers. The term has somehow, in some way, made its way into Wiggins' performances. Later, Afrika Bambaataa said that DJ Lovebug Starski used the term hip-hop to describe the culture as a whole.
