Eighteen-year-old Clive Campbell (DJ Kool Herc) and his friend Coke La Rock are often called the fathers of hip-hop. Two teenagers from the Bronx decided to try something a little different while entertaining guests at their sister's court yard. The party took place at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the South Bronx. Before this time, MCs usually introduced the DJ, the music and were responsible for raising the energy of the crowd with jokes and stories. On August 11, 1973, Coke La Rock grabbed the microphone to do just that during Herc's innovative instrumental spins, to which words were added, and thus, as Google wrote, hip-hop was born.
